  • Worlds Apart: Four-Part Series on Cross-Cultural Healthcare
    Worlds Apart includes four videos (VHS) with a guide. Produced by Fanlight Productions, Boston, MA; 2003. This 49-minute series shows how cross-cultural conflicts arise and how they can affect health decisions and outcomes. It discusses language barriers, cultural and religious beliefs, racial and ethnic disparities in health care, and reasons for non-adherence to medications.
  • Trading Beliefs: Four Hmong Families Consider Relinquishing Their Traditional Health Beliefs
    Trading Beliefs is a 20-minute video (VHS) produced by the Minnesota Center for Health Care Ethics, 1997. It traces the experiences of four Hmong families who sought help from western medicine. It explains what can be done to promote successful cross cultural medical care relationships.
  • The Split Horn: Life of a Hmong Shaman in America
    This is the powerful story of Paja Thao, a Hmong Shaman, and his family living in Appleton, WI. This video documents their 17-year journey from the mountains of Laos to the heartland of America. This poignant film shows a Shaman’s struggles to maintain ancient traditions as his children embrace their new life in the United States. Produced by Alchemy Films 2001.
  • Who Will I Become? Kuv Yuav Peem Tsheej Ua Tuabneeg Zoo Le Caag?
    This one-hour film was created to welcome Hmong refugees to the Twin Cities in the summer of 2004. Personal stories of refugees are highlighted. Differences between the experiences of the first Hmong refugees and later arrivals are described. The film is a powerful reminder that the United States is home to many people who have made similar journeys in the past centuries.
  • The New Minnesotans
    This 25-minute video is excellent for small group discussions. Discussion items may include questions such as “How might resettlement be different for someone who arrives as a refugee compared to someone who arrives as an immigrant?” “How do you define ‘literacy’?” “How can individuals use stories to really listen to people’s experiences?” “What issues exist between immigrant generations?”
